I chose Neville Brody as my designer and the compound modular/column grid for this poster design. Made to fit in Vibe magazine, I was trying for a "mysterious" theme. I wanted the poster to seem spooky without showing much information or even the entire background image. In my hierarchy I wanted the slogan ("We've been expecting you") to be seen first, then the title (Venice Beach Freak Show), then the information (with address, website, etc.), and last the article. I adjusted the colors of the background image to make them more saturated and changed the colors and directions of some of the type to make it more interesting.
Here was my first final poster that I showed in critique:
After critique I changed the color of "Freak Show" to a blue, to match the blue colors in the bottom right of the image. And I moved the "Info" box down. Here is my final poster:
I thought the yellow text (been) was very effective, and look forward to seeing "Freak show" in blue. Just from the blog image, it is easier to identify it from Venice Beach.
ReplyDeleteI like the mysterious theme and how you were able to convey that through not showing all of objects in the picture. It really makes the viewer try to look past the text, which shows the effectiveness of the placement. Very cool!
ReplyDeleteContent / Idea / SLOGAN – “we’ve been expecting you”. A big leap FROM YOUR PREVIOUS WORK!! and you captured Neville Brody’s techniques without totally copying it – coming up with a different visual look that works.
ReplyDeleteDesign: THE hierarchy is working and the information clear, to the point which was emphasized by your use of the grid. The slogan is the most important and that is very clear in your layout - it pops out in a playful and graphic way and is legible. You have reflected and improved on your last design congratulations. Calla it is a pleasure to have you in the class!! You have used the grid as a structure. Elements of 2D have been addressed – movement through out the advertisement - jumping from picture to text, across and down the page. The saturated color is strong warm and cool color with the blue and yellow as points of reference . Even the use of the text hazing over the image is mysterious. Good job.
